REFUGEE RESPONSE

Uganda is home to the largest number of refugees in Africa, with many of them living in refugee settlements. However, some refugees opt to relocate to urban areas like Kampala due to inadequate services, limited job opportunities, and decreasing assistance in the settlements. Despite the lack of support for urban refugees, many choose to remain in Kampala because they believe they have a better chance of finding employment there compared to the settlements. SASCU has established a Memorandum of Understanding with the Office of the Prime Minister-Department of Refugees, and we are actively assisting urban refugees in several ways.

1. we are providing vocational and entrepreneurship training to refugee youths in partnership with various organizations, TVET training institutions, and the private sector. Additionally, SASCU supports trained refugee graduates in becoming job-ready and developing business plans to start their own ventures. We also facilitate their connection to employment opportunities in the private sector.

2. Sascu provides business development and management training to Refugee youths and women who already have a business or a solid business idea. This training includes Business Coaching and Mentorship (Business Clinics) to help them turn their business plans into successful enterprises. Additionally, SASCU supports the social and economic empowerment of women by establishing Village Savings and Loan Associations. These associations help women finance their business start-ups and develop their enterprises at the community level, ultimately increasing their opportunities for self-employment and improving their income levels. Moreover, SASCU runs An approved emergency Shelter that provides safety for unaccompanied or separated refugee children, which also includes victims of sexual abuse below the age of 19. This Shelter focuses on their rehabilitation, ensuring their safety, and protecting them from any kind of abuse, including sexual exploitation and abuse.
