Welcome to The Sascu Gift Shop

Chickens are an essential meat source for families living in developing countries because these households usually do not have access to cooling facilities that could preserve their food. A chicken can be consumed in one day whereas the meat of a slaughtered pig or cattle would need a suitable storage space that is often not affordable. Of course, the chicken’s eggs also taste great and they are used in a wide variety of local dishes. Even the eggshells are reused as fertilizers in the fields.

How does it work:

It is not only your trust that we want to earn but it is also the trust of the families we support that we want to keep. That’s why we internally keep a list on which the respective gift order is written down. As soon as you have decided on this gift, our social worker buys and brings the chicken to the family in turn. The gifted family can use the eggs and the offspring for home use or they can sell the surplus at the local market. With this money, the parents can invest in the education and health of the children.

Sports is a great way for children to learn essential life skills that will serve them in later life, such as teamwork and cooperation.

Ugandan children are continuously on the move, they enjoy playing with each other and challenge themselves in various sport competitions.

Footballs, badminton rackets, basketball, hoops, bicycles, roller skates and many others are gifts that our children get excited about.

Social skills for kids are built by playing with other children, where they can form friendships and have fun. However, this is not possible for children living on the street. Imagine the good times kids can share with other kids when you help to provide sports equipment.

With this gift, you are handing over so much fun and excitement which helps the children to overcome their past.

The children in our facility already have sports gear to play with, but somewhat gets always lost or broken and needs to be replaced. With your financial support, you help us to easily replace individual items and also purchase additional ones.

This isn’t just a soccer ball, nets, or basketballs, it is time to play for children every day.  Just maybe, one day you will get to score that goal with the kids team.

A balanced breakfast in combination with a warm lunch is known to be central in order to keep our children fit and energetic throughout the afternoon. The children spend a great part of their day at school, so fresh ingredients as well as a diverse menu is an important contribution to their nutrition supply.

This is important for their growth as well as physical and mental development. Enjoying the meals together allows the students to chat with each other in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, which encourages social interactions.

Your gift will keep the children nourished and enable them to stay in school to fulfill their dreams.

Access to education is particularly difficult for underprivileged population groups. In Uganda, these groups include children who grow up in poverty and in particular, the girls are heavily affected because of traditional gender roles. Numerous girls have to help out at home, but also early marriages or teenage pregnancies can stop them from attending school. The poorer the family is, the lower the children’s educational opportunities are. By supporting the parents with their educational costs, we make sure that there are fewer reasons for them to take their child out of school.

Your gifted Education Kit is going to send one child to school for a term.                                                     When you choose this gift, a child receives not only the required school uniform but we also pay for school fees, books, uniforms and a backpack.

With your gift we are able to plant a tree that supplies a family or even an entire community with tasty fruits. The rich Ugandan soil is the perfect nutrient to plant trees that quickly provide a plentiful harvest of avocados, mangos, bananas and many other sorts.

How does it work:

Our organization works directly with the families in the communities which means that we know their respective needs very well.  In order to distribute your gifts fairly, we keep a list that provides a precise order. Our social workers ask the family in turn which fruit tree they would like to have. Thereafter, we bring and plant the tree together.

When was the last time you saw an ox plough at work in your home country? In Uganda we also don’t see them very often… but we wish to change that.

Your gift is precious to our rural families who can cultivate large areas with it. Finally, the farmers would grow enough crops to feed the entire household and have possible surpluses to sell at the local markets. The extra income contributes to the children’s education and health.

How does it work:

As with all of our gift giving, we strive to ensure that it follows a fair process. Our social workers work without intermediaries, which means we know every single need very well. Internally we keep a list on which the respective gift order is written down. As soon as you have decided on this gift, our social worker buys and brings the plow to the family in turn. We regularly check whether our gift is still in good condition. This includes the proper maintenance of the device as well as the prohibition on selling it.

Like all over the world, also in Uganda families face the need for self-isolation due to the pandemic. The families that we work with, have no financial reserves with which they could buy food and water in stock for several days. Hunger and thirst force them to break the quarantine, which harms not only themselves but also others.

With this gift you provide one of our families with food, water and firewood for the entire time of the quarantine.

How does it work:

Our social workers work without any intermediaries, which means we know every single need in the community very well. With your support we have the financial means to intervene instantly. Not only do we provide the family with the nutrition they need to survive, but we also observe whether their health status requires further actions.

$150.00

When was the last time you saw a savings box in your home?  Well, that is because you have a bank account.  As a single woman in a rural community, there is never enough money but as a team, the women are financially strong enough to not only save money but they can even start their own local business together.

Your gift is precious to our rural women who form a group of ten to twenty five individuals. The women will develop as a team and therefore be able to invest in small scale business, acquire loans and assets such as land. The extra income contributes to their economic independence as well as to their children’s food supply, education and health.

How does it work:

As with all of our gift giving, we strive to ensure that it follows a fair process. Our social workers work without middle men, which means we know every single need very well. Internally we keep a list on which the respective gift order is written down. As soon as you have decided on this gift, our social workers buy and bring the saving box to the women’s group in turn. Uganda has a quite a good health system, nevertheless the medical care is out of reach for the broad majority which as well applies for the parents and their children that we work with. Pain and illnesses that could be treated easily have to be endured, sometimes over years, because the necessary financial means are missing.

Without being a doctor yourself, this gift enables you to make a person healthy again.

How does it work:

With your financial support, we are able to accompany the patient to a doctor where he or she can be treated. In addition, our social workers are also available to provide advice and they assist with the possible follow-up treatment.

Pig

$200.00

Uganda has a large number of delicious dishes based on pig’s meat- we especially recommend trying “Kikalayi”.

Pigs are easy to keep, have many offspring and are fast growing. A slaughtered pig needs to be consumed right away, that it is more likely to be served on festive occasions when families come together.

However, the farmers can sell their meat surplus at local markets. The generated additional income allows the family to pay for their daily expenses.

Giving a pig to a family is truly like giving a lucky charm to someone who was wishing for it.

How does it work:

As with all of our gift giving, we ensure that it follows a fair process. We internally maintain a list on which the respective order is written down and we stick to it. Our social worker buys and brings your gifted pig, together with another one of the opposite sex, to the family in turn. These parent animals are not allowed to be slaughtered which is one of the fundamentals of the cooperation. We regularly check if only the offspring is used.

$200.00

In Uganda, families rely on their small squares of land in order to produce food and get the most from their small farms.

Your Gift will support families with seeds for fruits and vegetable as well as with hoes and spades. This gift will allow families in rural communities to put food on the table this thanksgiving and every other celebration after.

Finally, the farmers would grow enough crops to feed the entire household and have possible surpluses to sell at the local markets. The extra income contributes to the children’s education and healthcare.

This modest gift will give families everything they need to grow healthy, nutritious food, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables.

How does it work:

As with all of our gift giving, we strive to ensure that it follows a fair process. Our social workers work directly with families and communities, which means we are informed about the local needs. Internally we keep a list on which the respective gift order is written down. As soon as you have decided on this gift, our social worker buys and brings the seeds as well as the tools to the family in turn. We regularly check whether our gift is still in good condition. This includes the proper maintenance of the device, planting of the seeds and harvesting of the yields as well as the prohibition on selling the tools.

Uganda has the youngest population in the world, with 77% of its inhabitants aged under twenty five years. Nearly a quarter of the girls that are aged between fifteen to nineteen years have a baby or are pregnant. Usually, this forces them to drop out of school and leave their parents’ home.  They seek shelter with their grandparents, friends or NGOs that offer help.

With your gift we offer a young mother a six months tailoring training after which she receives a sewing machine as an essential part of the startup kit. This program also includes lunch and daily transport to the training center.  With those professional tools she is able to start her own small business that brings in the money that is needed for her small family. This opportunity is mainly used by girls and women, and not by men.

The course take place twice a year. The groups consist of between fifteen and twenty five students.  Our success rate is 70%.

One day you might want to visit and buy one of her designs.

How does it work:

Our organization works directly with the children and youths in the communities which means that we know their respective needs very well.  In order to distribute your gifts fairly, we keep a list of young mothers that want to be trained in order to be able to start their own business

Cow

$500.00

In Uganda, cattle are considered the most important livestock.  Cows are specifically very essential for the livelihood of the families that we work with, especially in rural communities. You see the animals freely grazing in the bushes, even in the shed.

They provide their owners with nutritious meat or up to forty litres of fresh milk every day. Some of the milk is consumed by the family and the surplus milk is sold. The money earned from the milk sales can be used for the children’s education and healthcare.

How does it work: With your support SASCU gives a family a cow that gives birth to at least one calf per year. The cow sometimes has twins, which makes it a very sustainable support.  When the first female calf is old enough, it is gifted to another family, which nurtures it until it gives birth to a calf that is then also given to another family. With this multiplication effect, in three years, your gift of ONE cow supports THREE families! The parent animals may not be slaughtered which is one of the fundamentals of the cooperation with our organization and the implementation is checked regularly.

Your gifted cow changes the opportunities of Ugandan families permanently.

$700.00

Like many teenagers around the globe, our children seek a self-determined life when they reach a certain age. Nevertheless, our organization remains a part of their family and we stay supportive and emotionally attached even when they have moved out. Our mission is so much more than keeping the children healthy and safe as they grow up. Just like parents do, we support them beyond the basic needs and they can count on us during their way into a promising future as educated young adults.

These students mainly finance their tuition fees with student loans and all kind of part-time jobs. The biggest one-time expense is the cost for the needed laptop and we are happy to offer support here. The students still have to work and learn hard but with this gift, you are literally giving them the tool to be able to do so.

How does it work:

Not all of our children decide to study when they reach that age. Some choose an apprenticeship or jump straight into their professional lives and acquire skills for it. This is why we have limited needs for this gift and why it is only available from time to time. However, that doesn’t change the fact that it makes a big difference for those who are hoping for it at the moment. As soon as you choose this gift, we buy the laptop and handover to the student.

$8,900.00

Our organization does not only run two children’s facilities, but we are also strongly connected with the communities where we work. We regularly see poor access to clean water in rural communities. Women, together with children are forced to fetch water from far away rivers, lakes or even ponds. This contaminated water is responsible for a variety of serious diseases like malaria, dysentery, diarrhea and bilharzia.

The most affected ones are the children whose immune system is not yet strong enough to cope.

With your gift we are able to construct a borehole that supplies the community with clean water.  The children will walk shorter distances to fetch water and therefore have more time for school.

How does it work:

Our organization works directly with the communities, which means that we know their respective needs very well.  In order to distribute your gifts fairly, we keep a list of communities that have no source of clean water. Together with the local leaders of the respective communities, our program officer coordinates the process.
